Folklorist Alex Marković (who is also current president of the EEFC) wrote his PhD thesis on the dances of Vranje. The dance does exist there, but, although the structure is the same, the step starts backward, out of the line of direction, before heading to the right. There is a very funky brass band version (called “Stara Vranjanka”) that is on an LP that Atanas Kolarovski put out 20+ years ago, that is closer to the way the melody is played now. It is really a lovely tune. My favorite, although only instrumental, is by the late Sava Jeremić with his son’s band, on a very well-recorded Jugoton LP.
