Like many other fascinating subjects in the Balkans, Anatolia, and the Levant, musical instruments in this region reflect the meeting of East and West, Ancient and Modern, Paganism, Islam & Christianity. Here we find descendants of plucked string instruments found on early Greek vases alongside precursors of Western Symphony orchestras, and Roma musicians using saxophones and synthesizers to play jazz in complex Bulgarian dance rhythms.
